Belltec H Series hydraulic auger drive

2 Inch Hex vs. 2-9/16 Inch Round Auger Shafts: What's the Difference?

Two auger bits can have the same drilling diameter but different connections. Understanding the difference between 2 inch hex and 2-9/16 inch round output shafts helps you avoid purchasing incompatible equipment.

What is an auger drive output shaft?

The output shaft transfers torque from the hydraulic auger drive to the auger bit. The bit connection must match the shaft shape, dimensions and retention hardware. Two common types are 2 inch hex and 2-9/16 inch round, which are not directly interchangeable.

2 inch hex shafts

A 2 inch hex shaft has six flat sides and is measured across opposite flats. Belltec LC Series auger drives use this connection. The 2 inch size describes the connection, not the drilling diameter. Choose an auger bit diameter within the drive manufacturer's limits.

2-9/16 inch round shafts

A 2-9/16 inch round connection has a nominal diameter of 2.5625 inches. Its retention and torque transfer features must match the auger bit. Belltec H Series drives have interchangeable 2 inch hex and 2-9/16 inch round shaft configurations.

Do shaft connections determine hole diameter?

No. A 12 inch auger bit can have different shaft connection options. Select drilling diameter and connection separately. Belltec DCA semi-double flight dirt augers are available in multiple collar configurations.

Which Belltec drives use 2 inch hex?

The Belltec LC-150 is a compact drive with a 2 inch hex connection, specified for 6 to 15 GPM and a maximum 18 inch dirt or rock auger. Belltec LC Series drives use 2 inch hex. HTLS-6K and HTLS-7K also use 2 inch hex, while the HTLS-10K uses 2-1/2 inch hex. Always check the exact model.

Which Belltec drives support 2-9/16 inch round?

The Belltec H-200, H-300 and H-350 use interchangeable 2 inch hex and 2-9/16 inch round output shafts. The H-300 is specified for 15 to 30 GPM and up to 36 inch dirt or rock augers. Change shafts only according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Can you use an auger adapter?

Yes, compatible and properly rated adapters can connect some different shaft and collar types. Adapter direction matters. A 2 inch hex drive to a 2-9/16 inch round bit requires a different configuration from the reverse. Verify the male and female ends, exact dimensions, retention hardware and ratings.

Do adapters affect performance?

An adapter does not increase a drive's torque or approved auger diameter. It adds a mechanical connection and may change overall length. Follow the drive, adapter and bit manufacturers' operating limits.

What about auger extensions?

Extensions increase drilling reach but must use compatible shaft connections. Verify length, drilling depth, machine clearance and the manufacturer's limits before adding one.

Which connection is better?

Neither is universally better. Select the connection that matches your equipment. Also consider hydraulic flow, pressure, torque, drilling diameter, soil conditions and machine compatibility.

Before ordering

Check your drive make and model, output shaft size and profile, bit collar, required drilling diameter and length, cutting design and manufacturer limits. Confirm all adapter and extension compatibility.

The bottom line

2 inch hex and 2-9/16 inch round auger shafts serve the same purpose but are not directly interchangeable. Belltec H Series offers interchangeable configurations, while other drives require matching bits or correctly specified adapters. JST Attachment Sales can help you identify compatible equipment.
